Some things that get me out of bed

A library of references in permanent construction, and probabily already out of date. Many of the descriptions are not yet translated to english, for which I apologize.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her squad

While everyone was laughing at the obscenities of Trump, a record number of women ran for Congress in the USA and got elected. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is probabily the best known of them, along with Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib. They recenter politics on the problems of common working people, and inspire many more to organize and claim for their rights.

Pedro Feijó

Activista queer e primeiro subscritor do Acordo Queerográfico. Ficou conhecido em 2009 quando criticou duramente o Ministério da Educação pelo ataque à democracia nas escolas, na presença da ministra. Ver também uma reportagem mais recente no Expresso.

ACT UP

Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners

Aaron Swartz

He was a computer programmer and political activist fighting for Internet freedom. He commited suicide in 2013, aged 26, following pressure from the FBI. He helped create many techonolgies vital to the Internet as we know it today. See the documentary "The Internet's Own Boy".

Margarida Tengarrinha

Resistente anti-fascista no Estado Novo. Com o seu marido, José Dias Coelho, usavam os conhecimentos técnicos adquiridos nas Belas-Artes para falsificar documentos para o PCP, na clandestinidade. É um gosto ouvi-la contar as suas histórias.

Federica Montseny

Spanish writer, pedagogue, anarchist leader and the first woman to become minister in West Europe. See the documentary Federica Montseny, The Indomitable

Ada Colau

First she was an activist for housing and against evictions. Since 2015 she's the mayor of Barcelona, by the coalition Barcelona en Comú. They showed a new way of doing politics, with ecology, feminism and the common people at the center. See the film Alcaldessa (2016) and Ada's articles in The Guardian.

Barcelona en Comú

Citizen platform that won the municipality of Barcelona in 2015 with a feminist political program aiming to control rampant tourism and fight for decent housing. See their documentary Two Years Later

Graphic Liberation Movements

At the municipal elections of 2015 in Spain, designers, illustrators and other people volunteered to produce a myriad of images — from funny memes to elaborate drawings — which helped elect the progressive candidates as presidents of Madrid (Manuela Carmena) and Barcelona (Ada Colau).

SOS Racismo

Maybe the most active association in Portugal fighting against racism, xenophobia, intolerance and neo-nazism. Website

GAT - Grupo de Ativistas em Tratamentos

Portuguese non-profit association of people affected by HIV/AIDS, fighting for the erradication of the epidemic and the improvement of the quality of life of people living with HIV. They have a detection centre aimed at men who have sex with men which seems to me a notable example of how health care should be provided to everyone, everywhere. Website

Access Culture

A portuguese association working to make cultural venues and events accessible to every person, overcoming physical, social and intellectual barriers. They have an award for plain language. Website
